Safety guide

How should an AI receptionist handle an emergency call?

An AI receptionist should not become the emergency service. Its job is to recognize defined risk signals, give the approved emergency instruction, route the caller when appropriate, and stop trying to complete normal lead intake when safety comes first.

Recognize signals

Use narrow questions and phrases that your business has reviewed.

Give approved instructions

Direct to 911, utility, emergency contact, or human on-call path where required.

Stop normal booking

Do not keep qualifying a sales lead while there may be immediate danger.

Review incidents

Emergency-classified calls should be easy to audit and improve.

Define emergency vs urgent vs routine

For one business, an active gas odor is an emergency while a no-heat call is urgent. For another, the boundaries are different. Write the categories before building automation.

Examples of signals that may require a special path

  • Immediate threat to life or property
  • Fire, smoke, gas, carbon-monoxide, electrical, or structural danger
  • Severe injury or medical distress
  • Violence, threats, or crisis situations
  • Hazardous chemical exposure
  • Downed power lines or other public utility hazards

Keep the language short

Once a true emergency condition is identified, the assistant should not continue a long intake. The approved message should clearly tell the caller what emergency resource to use and whether any human transfer is available.

Do not let AI decide technical safety questions

The model can classify against your rules, but it should not diagnose whether a smell is dangerous, whether wiring is safe, whether a structure can be entered, or whether a medical symptom can wait.

Common questions

What businesses usually want to know first

Can BookedOnMute replace an emergency dispatcher?

No. It is not 911 or an emergency-response service.

Can it transfer to an on-call technician?

Yes where the phone setup supports it and your rules define when that transfer should happen.

Should emergency calls be recorded?

Recording and consent laws vary. The business should review the legal and operational requirements for its jurisdiction.

Map this around your real calls.
